The role of music bands in the growing popularity of the saxophone in Spain in the second half of the 19th century

The advantages evidenced by the saxophone following its inclusion in French military bands led to its rapid adoption throughout Europe. Its early introduction in Spain changed the com- position of music bands; first that of military bands and subsequently that of civilian and mu- nicipal bands. Hence, these bands played a major role in teaching and popularising the new instrument in Spain. The inclusion of the saxophone in officially recognised courses in music schools and conservatories and the publication of teaching materials for the instrument were major factors in consolidating the saxophone as a music band instrument.
