From the Theatre to the Military: First Manifestations of Zarzuela in the Wind Orchestra Repertoire

Zarzuela and the wind orchestra are phenomena with intertwining histories for nearly 170 years. The potential for expanding the repertoire for wind orchestra transpired in the practice of transcribing popular zarzuelas performed in Spanish theatres during 19th and 20th centuries. The present article considers early manifestations of the use of theatre music outside of these institutions. Francisco Asenjo Barbieri, one of the prominent figures of the zarzuela isabelina, features prominently in this process. Two works linked to its production are examined: Seguidillas de la zarzuela Gloria y peluca and Tanda de rigodones de la zarzuela Jugar con fuego.
