Abstract

The Spanish Republican Band (formerly the Halberdiers Band and currently the Royal Guards Band) was invited to participate in a charity music festival in Paris in late June and early July 1933, together with seven other European military bands, most of which were associated with the heads of state of their respective countries. Based on an analysis of French and Spanish newspaper archives, this article explores what participation in the festival meant for the Spanish band and identifies the repertoire performed. This latter consisted of lyric and symphonic pieces based on elements of folklore and outstanding, dazzling compositions such as the Jota Aragonesa by Sarasate, combined with an international repertoire, in line with the Romantic symphonies by Wagner and Russian composers.
