Mitología latina en las bandas de música: el poema sinfónico Floria de Eduardo Felip Suárez y la influencia wagneriana

Abstract

The original compositions written for music bands during the first third of the 20th century are abundant, but they’re usually, with some exceptions, pasodobles, processional marches and some baileable pieces. It isn't common during this period to find long-lasting compositions, such as a symphonic poem. In this article we will analyse the symphonic poem Floria, by Eduardo Felip, an example of programmatic music based on the latin mythology. In the analysis, besides making a detailed study of the musical form, we will examine the resources used by the composer to describe the nature, the song of the birds or the dances that the mythological creatures dance, among others.Throughout this work, we can see the influence exerted by the most prominent symphonic composers of that time, such as Richard Wagner and other renowned artists, as well as the influence of the music bands with their fantasies based on zarzuela transcriptions.
